1. ApoB — the cardiovascular number that matters
ApoB counts the actual number of artery-clogging particles in your blood, and it’s a more accurate predictor of cardiovascular risk than standard LDL cholesterol (JAHA; large UK Biobank analysis PubMed). You can have “normal” LDL and still carry elevated risk if your ApoB is high.
2. Fasting insulin & HbA1c — the metabolic engine
Insulin resistance often shows up years before blood sugar does. Fasting insulin and HbA1c together reveal how well your metabolism is handling fuel.
3. hs-CRP — the inflammation signal
High-sensitivity CRP flags chronic, low-grade inflammation that drives many age-related diseases.
4. Waist & visceral fat — the free one
Waist circumference (and DEXA, if you want precision) tracks the metabolically active fat around your organs — more informative than body weight alone.
What moves all four — the same levers
Resistance + aerobic exercise, a mostly-plant diet with adequate protein and fiber, weight/visceral-fat reduction, good sleep, and not smoking. One set of habits improves the whole panel — which is exactly why measuring these few numbers is so powerful.
