One of the strongest predictors of how long you’ll live is something you can check in seconds: how hard you can squeeze. Grip strength is a remarkably reliable proxy for whole-body strength and resilience.
What the research shows
Across dozens of studies, lower grip strength predicts higher all-cause mortality — a meta-analysis found roughly a 16% higher mortality risk for each 5 kg drop in grip strength, and researchers describe it as an “indispensable biomarker” for older adults (review; Tromsø Study).
It’s not that strong hands magically extend life — grip reflects overall muscle, activity, and physiological reserve. But it’s an easy window into all of that.
How to measure it
- Hand dynamometer (~$25) for an actual number to track.
- Dead hang from a bar — time how long you can hold.
- Sit-to-rise test — a related measure of lower-body strength and balance.
How to build it
- Carry heavy things — farmer’s carries, loaded grocery walks.
- Hang and pull — dead hangs, rows, pull-ups or assisted versions.
- Train strength overall — grip improves as part of full-body resistance work 2–3×/week.
Track your number every few months. Watching it climb is one of the most motivating feedback loops in fitness.
